(\u201cCorinthian\u201d), business partner of Aequitas Capital Management (\u201cAequitas\u201d), to pay $1 billion over claims the company misled students and investors on March 25, 2016.<\/p>\n<p>This comes two weeks after the Securities and Exchange Commission (\u201cSEC\u201d) charged Oregon-based Aequitas with operating a \u201cPonzi-like\u201d scheme.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.silverlaw.com\/media\/news-releases\/silver-law-group-investigates-aequitas-management-llc-others-possible-violations-federal-securities-laws\/\" target=\"_blank\">Silver Law Group is currently investigating claims against Aequitas<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.silverlaw.com\/blog\/silver-law-group-investigates-concert-wealth-management-summit-advisor-solutions-private-advisory-group-rias-sold-aequitas-securities-amidst-sec-allegations-running-po\/\" target=\"_blank\">Registered Investment Advisor (\u201cRIAs\u201d) firms with respect to possible violations of federal securities.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Corinthian filed for bankruptcy on May 2015 and is unlikely to pay the $1 billion in civil penalties and damages to affected students, but the ruling has paved the way for the U.S. Department of Education to declare that loans issued to attend Corinthian can be forgiven.<\/p>\n<div class=\"read_more_link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.silverlaw.com\/blog\/aequitas-business-partner-corinthian-colleges-ordered-pay-1-billion-misleading-students\/\"  title=\"Continue Reading Aequitas Business Partner Corinthian Colleges Ordered to Pay Over $1 Billion for Misleading Students\" class=\"more-link\">Continue reading \u203a<\/a><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A California judge ordered the now-defunct Corinthian Colleges Inc.
